Equanimous is a very beautiful, well maintained blue water cruiser. Since we purchased her in 2005 we have made two circumnavigations of Vancouver island. We have also made many excursions to the west coast and enjoyed frequent visits to anchorages up and down the Salish Sea. She has preformed extremely well in all categories but especially in her reliability, comfort and ease of handling. Under sail, she is a dream. It is nearly a hands-off experience as she sets her shoulder in and responds to a brisk wind. She is wonderful boat not only to own but also to experience.
For us, safety has always been an important factor, especially in our tricky west coast waters. We can also say, unequivocally, that there is no boat that we have felt more safe to be on, than this one. She has kept us out of harms way on many occasions. As her name implies, she is the calmness in the eye of a storm.
The HC 34 was a brain child of the well known and respected designer, Robert Perry. In a letter to a previous owner he states:
"The HC 34 was designed at the same time I was designing the Valiant 40 and uses a very similar, high deadrise type mid section. Later efforts by Hans Christian and other yards generally used a more round midsection. After trying the rounder midsection myself I eventually returned the HC34 type midsection with the Panda 40/Baba 40 and Tashiba 40 designs as well as Tashiba 36 and 31 designs. I just felt this original hull shape made for an all round better boat. This is a fine sailing boat that you obviously have maintained very well."
Even though she is only 34 feet, people are surprised at her accommodation. Interior volume alone does not mean much in a vessel - it is HOW that volume is used that matters - and Perry has done a masterful job of utilizing the HC 34's interior and deck space - this vessel has more functional space than a lot of 38 footers. The HC 34 enjoyed a very limited production run that had certainly nothing to do with whether or not she was a desirable sailboat. I think Robert Perry's comments indicating that he is very proud of this design addresses that question.
